The Italian Association of Neuroepidemiology (NEP) originates from the Special Section of Neuroepidemiology of the SIN, created in 1982. The NEP Statute, filed in May 1999, sets out the following aims of the Association:
to promote and support the development of epidemiological knowledge in the field of neurological diseases, with a view to preventing such diseases on the basis of a better understanding of their aetiopathogenesis and natural history, evaluating the efficiency and effectiveness of therapeutic and rehabilitative structures and interventions, and planning the organisation of neurology services;
to promote the dissemination of epidemiological science and methodology;
to foster connections among those engaged in neuroepidemiological research in Italy and abroad;
to promote and encourage collaboration with the structures of the National Health Service and with bodies, organisations, and entities interested in the field of neuroepidemiology.
Summary of the Statute
The Italian Association of Neuroepidemiology (NEP) was established as an independent association on 15 November 1997 in Turin (previously it had been a Section of the Italian Neurological Society). The current NEP Statute was filed in Pavia on 10 May 1999.
The Statute defines the aims of the NEP as outlined above.
Ordinary membership of the NEP may be obtained by submitting an application addressed to the President; the application must be countersigned by 2 ordinary members and accompanied by a curriculum vitae. Admission is approved by the Executive Board and entails the payment of an annual membership fee, the amount of which is determined each year by the General Assembly of Members.
The Executive Board is composed of the President of the NEP, the President of the SIN (or their delegate), and a variable number of between 5 and 7 members elected by secret ballot every 3 years; from among these, the Executive Board appoints a Secretary-Treasurer. The President is also elected by secret ballot by the General Assembly of Members; they serve a 3-year term and may be re-elected consecutively to the same office only once. Likewise, members of the Executive Board serve a 3-year term and may be re-elected consecutively to the same office only once.
